Charters Estate
Spa & Wellness Centre
Alongside Kirsops and the estate owners we worked on this £1.7million-plus spa refurbishment within the grounds of this unique art deco estate (formally owned by De Beers), where King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson fled on his abdication in 1936.
The project is to redesign and update the subterranean spa which had suffered extensive damage due to flooding. We worked with Kirsop & Company, and their insurers initially to put right this problem and then to upgrade it to a twenty-first century spa and wellness estate.
Our design highlights include a goldfish scale and marble topped reception desk, and Crittall walls and doors. Our redesign of the layout means that the lounge area, sauna and steam room now have views out onto the swimming pool which is swathed in black and gold mosaic tiles. Use of marble and timber in the changing and treatments rooms has created a calm luxury oasis, and Kristian’s inspiration of the 1930’s and a favourite scene in Moonraker can be seen in the plant and waterfall entrance area as well as in the black and gold Italian mosaic tiles in the flooring, columns and jacuzzi. A new mirror walled gym, residents lounge with pool and poker table, and a wall swathed in history and photos of the estate creates a relaxing space to meet fellow residents.
